Rogers International Commodities Index Committee Adjusts Index Weightings
CHICAGO/LUSANNE/TOKYO, JULY 1, 2005 - The Rogers International Index Committee announced today that the Rogers International Commodity Index® (RICI®) will be adjusted slightly from July 1st, 2005, in the percentages of agricultural commodities comprising the Index. The changes will affect the agricultural sector only with weightings being readjusted between commodities to accommodate execution factors. The new weightings are as follows: Decrease Rice weighting: from 2% to 0.5%; Barley: from 0.77% to 0.27%; Azuki Beans: from 1% to 0.5%; Wool: from 1% to 0.25%; Raw silk: from 0.15% to 0.05%. Increased Cotton weighting: from 3.0% to 4.0%; Soybean Meal: from 0.15% to 0.75%; Sugar: from 1% to 2%; Corn: from 4 to 4.75%.
Commenting on the changes, Jim Rogers, Chairman of the RICI® committee said, “These adjustments will not change the basic percentages in agriculture, metals, and energy. The adjustments will slightly change the weightings within the agricultural component only. For example, the decrease in wool and silk is almost exactly offset by the rise in cotton. All 3 are used for textiles and apparel so the change is not significant.”
Rogers created the RICI® in 1997 and 1998. The RICI® represents the value of a compendium (or "basket") of 35 globally traded commodities employed in the global economy, ranging from agricultural products and energy products to metals and minerals. Since January 1, 2005, the Rogers International Commodity Index® has increased by approximately 9.63% as of June 30, 2005. Since Rogers created the RICI® on August 1, 1998, the RICI® has increased by approximately 202.68%.
Currently, funds tracking the RICI® on a global basis exceed $1.5 billion. Rogers has been an advocate of commodities-based investing and natural resources since late 1998. He is well known for his two books: Investment Biker and Adventure Capitalist, both of which detailed his trips around the world seeking economic and political truth. His latest book, Hot Commodities, was published earlier this year.
